Engaging Uncertainty – Landscape, Infrastructure and multiple future in Canaan, Haiti: Light Station
After the 2010 Haitian earthquake, the informal settlement Canaan grew from 10 residents to 60,000. Despite rapid growth, land ownership remains contested and the site is at high risk of flooding. Students proposed strategies to shape future development in socially and ecologically productive ways despite the uncertainty of the site’s future. Shengyu Wang proposed ‘Light Station’ to attract settlers to safe zones with light. Anna Ziegler proposed ‘Reforestation through Urbanization’ to reforest the barren hills with tree-planting settlers.
